6.1 Introduction

This chapter characterizes chemical release and other waste management quantities as well as pollution prevention activities carried out by the US automotive manufacturing industry over the 2005–2015 time‐frame.1 Analysis of information available from federal databases such as the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) and industry reports reveals the corresponding environmental impacts, and identifies opportunities for continued progress. Throughout this chapter several terms are used that may not be familiar to the reader. These terms are defined below.
