22.1 Introduction
The US food manufacturing industry is a diverse sector representing $217 billion in value added (about 10% of all manufacturing value added) in 2016 and supporting approximately 1.5 million jobs. This chapter characterizes chemical release and other waste management quantities as well as pollution prevention activities reported by the food manufacturing industry in the United States (US) over the 2007–2017 timeframe.1 Analysis of information available from federal databases such as the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) and industry reports reveal the corresponding environmental impacts, and identify opportunities for continued progress.
