Chapter 5The Third Green Waste: Materials

In order to introduce the green waste of materials, let's revisit the tree concept discussed earlier. The first time I was introduced to this idea, I was stunned. It made so much sense; it was so simple; and all it takes to get it is a simple shift of thinking, which we have already explored and will continue to explore throughout this book. A tree naturally and effortlessly pulls together a number of resources and activities to produce a product (leaves) and a service (cleaning the air and purifying water) that in turn feed its own growth. Nothing is wasted; there are no negative impacts on the environment; and in fact there are positive impacts.
