13 RECASTING WEEE

Haley Bowcock, Computer Aid International’s Environmental Advocacy Officer, looks at the next version of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive.

In May 2011, the ewaste law in the European Union took one step closer to reform after the European Council agreed its position on proposals for a recast of the WEEE Directive. Progress on the recast is a positive thing, because there have been numerous delays in the process so far.

However, given the scale of the ewaste challenge – the EU is expected to generate some 12 million tonnes of ewaste a year by 2020 – the step taken by the Council was somewhat of a baby one.
