Ray Anderson, the founder of sustainability leader Interface Inc., has said many times that a green focus rescued the company during tough times. Getting lean saved Interface hundreds of millions of dollars, which helped it survive the post-Internet-bubble downturn that hit the commercial flooring business hard. But another aspect of sustainability helped. As Anderson told an audience at the Rocky Mountain Institute, “In my fifty-two years in business, I’ve never seen an issue galvanize people in a company like sustainability.”
