The idea for this book began to evolve in the late 1980s and early 1990s when public debates were ongoing about business and the environment. The 1970s had been characterized by an adversarial relationship between corporations and environmental groups. During the 1980s this relationship began to change as politicians, economists, executives and some environmentalists began developing proposals for the integration of economic and environmental objectives. Some businesses began to view the environment as a business opportunity and proactively pursued a ‘green market’. Others placed themselves at the forefront of ‘a new form of capitalism’ ...
