According to Peter Denning’s definition that we used in Chapter 2, innovation means “the adoption of a new practice in a community.” In other words, be it ever so well founded on careful inquiry, an invention does not become an innovation until people actually start to use it. Of course, we cannot really know if an invention will be popular and used until we actually give it to real users to try it out. But this is not easy—it often requires a lot of work just to get a working product into the hands of people who will actually use it.
