When Your Review Whacks You

A close relative of mistakes is the disappointing, lousy, gut punch performance review. Getting one is not a rare occurrence. Almost everybody experiences it. Few lead to separation. If you get started early, you can avoid one, but that’s not our focus here. Receiving it is.

Receivers experience a wave of negative emotions: disbelief, anger, denial, resentment, sadness, hurt. We react like a pendulum, swinging between extremes: “That jerk!” “I’m the dummy here.” “I hate my job!” “I can’t do anything right!” “They threw me under the bus!” “Who’s going to hire a loser like me?” “That @#$%!!”

Most people expect a decent review. They worked hard, accomplished a goal, and thought things were going reasonably well. Surprise! ...
