The Mastery Model
It is now time to introduce one final model for performance suc-
cess, which focuses on what I call the
messy middle. The
messy middle refers to what goes on inside a performer before
she actually performs. While we have been able to get at peo-
ple’s thoughts and attitudes through surveys, interviews, and
even some physiological measurements, we seem to lack a job
aid that helps us determine exactly what is going on in a per-
former’s head and heart just prior to that performance. Well,
