The business models of studios within the independent film industry combined with the economics of advertising present a considerable challenge when attempting to financially justify the use of advertising to promote independent films.
Major studio films typically receive 50% of the proceeds from box office, VOD and other sales and rentals. Independent films, on the other hand, which often have to rely on sales agents and unaffiliated distributors, typically receive 15–25% (or less) of box office proceeds, 35–50% of VOD sales and rentals and 10–35% of foreign territory, broadcast and many other sales and licensing agreements, net of fees and expenses.
