Contract Pricing: The Role of Auditors

Contracting officers hold the ultimate responsibility for determining whether a contractor’s proposed or actual compensation is fair and reasonable. In many instances, however, they will rely on other government agents, particularly contract auditors.

Contract auditors may visit a contractor before, during, or after contract performance. In virtually all cases the contact will be at the request of a contracting officer. Contracting officers can call upon contract auditors to provide accounting and financial advisory services. These contract audit services relate to the negotiation, administration, and settlement of contracts and subcontracts.
