1 Setting the scene
There are a number of investment classics which provide a general background to the first part of this chapter (and other parts of the book). Manias, Panics and Crashes, 4th edn, Wiley, 2000, by the late Charles Kindleberger is always worth re-reading, never more so than in the light of the 2007–09 credit crunch and the scandals which it helped to uncover. The sections on the Madoff and Stanford scandals draw on extensive discussions with wealth management professionals.
