1 INTRODUCTION

Glass optical fiber has received intense research and development over the past 30 years, forming the backbone of optical communication and sensing. More recently, this fiber has found applications in medical diagnosis and surgery. New types of glass optical fiber have also been developed, notably the photonic crystal fiber or holey fiber [1].
