Modern optical communication systems require not only signal amplification periodically but also devices that are capable of ultrafast all-optical signal processing. Fiber optic parametric amplifiers (FOPA), based on four-wave mixing (FWM) occurring inside optical fibers (see Chapter 6), are attracting considerable attention because they can provide broadband amplification and can thus replace erbium-doped fiber amplifiers used commonly for signal amplification.
