1 INTRODUCTION

Optical communication systems are evolving to accommodate the larger information content that needs to be transmitted over point-to-point or meshed networks. Although use of the L-band is being advocated to supplement the bandwidth in the C-band, most system providers prefer to use denser channel spacing in the C-band to increase the information-carrying capacity of their networks.
