LESSON 7Become a Better Listener

Listening is a fascinating and complex skill, and like any other skill, it takes time and practice to develop. Remember to do the following when listening to another person:

• Encourage the other person to talk by being a good listener. That’s the only way to learn what the other party wants.

• Limit your talking. You can’t talk and listen at the same time.

• Ask questions if you don’t understand something.

• Don’t interrupt. Allow the other person time for pauses.

• Focus on what the other person is saying. Shut out distractions. If you’re in a room that’s very hot or cold, are you thinking about the temperature instead of what the person is saying?
