8.3. WHAT MAKES A TRULY GREAT WORKPLACE?

After having studied a variety of workplaces that ranged from poor to great, I have identified seven key factors that every organization needs to pay attention to if they want to excel (Stein & MHS Staff, 2005; Stein, 2007).

My definition of a successful organization is one that is people-oriented, efficient, productive, and innovative. It's the kind of organization where talented people want to work. Leaders of these organizations tend to ask me how to select from among the dozens of great applicants that come to their doors. In contrast, I meet other leaders who tell me that there seems to be a serious shortage of talent to choose from.
