8.2. Oleaginous yeasts and raw materials used for microbial oil production
There are many microalgae, yeasts (eg, Candida, Cryptococcus, Lipomyces, Rhodotorula, Rhodosporidium, Trichosporon), fungi (eg, Mortierella, Cunninghamella), and bacteria (eg, Rhodococcus, Mycobacterium) that can accumulate intracellularly high amounts of SCO that has similar fatty acid composition to vegetable oils (Meng et al., 2009; Papanikolaou and Aggelis, 2011). Microorganisms can be characterized as oleaginous in the case that they can accumulate SCO to more than 20% of their total cellular dry weight (Ratledge, 1991).
