15.3. Biomass gasification process
Gasification of biomass is a thermal process which occurs when it reacts with an oxidizer to produce a gaseous fuel-rich product and small amount of char and ash. Biomass gasification targets the final production of bio-hydrogen, bio-syngas for subsequent manufacture of chemicals, substitute natural gas, or low-to-medium energy fuel gas for generation of heat and power.
Gasification proceeds at high temperatures, normally between 800 and 1300°C, in order to enhance gas production. The obtained synthesis gas (or syngas, or producer gas) is rich in H2, CO, CH4, CO2, and other minor components such as other gaseous hydrocarbons, tars, and nitrogen, sulfur, and alkali compounds.
