Consumption
The subject area Consumption deals with the many different ways that people consume energy for practical purposes. This section includes a wide variety of energy sources, such as biomass (wood), hydropower, coal, oil (including whale oil), gas, electricity, wind, photovoltaics, and nuclear power. It also traces the growth of the global human population from 1930 onward, because population is such a crucial factor in the rate of consumption (as was notably described by Malthus; see 1798 entry below).
