The Applications theme presents material concerning the ways in which humans make practical use of the various energy sources described in Part I, Sources. It begins with a section describing the ways in which energy is consumed, followed by a section dealing with how it is converted from one form to another. The next section includes milestones in energy efficiency; i.e., improvements in the use of an existing energy source, or the substitution of a more efficient new source an existing one. The following sections provide coverage of how energy is stored, the important materials involved with energy use, and the devices and tools used in energy applications.
