INTRODUCTION

Having spent many years working in investment management, it came as a surprise when moving into investment administration to discover there were very few textbooks available. To obtain any detailed material meant that a significant amount of research was needed from an array of differing books, articles and websites.

I came to realise that what was needed was one comprehensive publication that covered the main processes that are encountered in retail investment administration. It needed to provide the background on why processes are undertaken and enough detail to form a day-to-day reference book with pointers to where to find more detailed explanations. Such a book would, I believe, be a useful tool in any office where investment administration is undertaken.

Investment administration has a key role to play in the many and varied investment products and services that are available in the retail investment market and so the book starts with an overview of wealth management. This provides vital background information on the industry. It then goes on to look at the main activities that are undertaken but also considers ancillary areas as diverse as trusts and powers of attorney.

The book follows a pattern of a short introduction to each chapter which aims to provide some essential and interesting background to the area and is followed by a detailed review of the activities and processes that are undertaken.
