Recycling in Context

Abstract

The recycling of metals is widely viewed as a fruitful sustainability strategy, but information on the degree to which recycling is actually occurring is limited in scope and detail. In this chapter we define various metrics for the recycling of metals and present current information on recycled content (RC), end-of-life recycling rates (EOL-RR), and old scrap ratios (OSR) for 60 metals of the periodic table. Because of growth in metal use over time, and because metal in-use lifetimes can be many years to several decades, many RC values are low and will remain so for the foreseeable future.
