Abstract

Municipal solid waste (MSW) is a topic in which everybody is an expert, because everybody is a producer of MSW. Despite (or perhaps because of) the fact that we have so many experts on the subject, MSW is a difficult waste stream to manage. Its composition varies around the world and according to the season, plus there are about 7 billion producers of MSW. Proper management of MSW is essential for a society in order to provide for sanitation and to prevent environmental pollution.
