Attitudinal and Motivational Constructs in Science Learning

This chapter examines the attitudinal and motivational constructs that are closely linked to science learning. First, we present a rationale for the study of attitudes and motivation in the context of science learning. We then discuss the history of attitude research in science education, define constructs prominent in this research, and review recent attitude research findings. We review research methods and instruments, students’ attitudes toward science and factors that influence them, and interventions to change students’ attitudes.
