Cyber-Physical Security of Automotive Information Technology

26.1 Introduction

Automobiles are now networks of embedded systems, some of which are integrated into global information networks. This is the basis of many recent major innovative automobile applications. In this context, traditional automotive security solutions, like car alarms, keyless entry, etc. fail to adequately protect automobiles. We use the term automotive system to be inclusive, since in addition to the automobile itself, applications present on the vehicle's processors and manufacturer back-end servers are subject to compromise.
