Abstract: ‘Rhetoric in epic is not confined to speeches.’ This dictum by Joe Farrell (1997) warns us against the still popular prejudice that the quality of epic poetry is inversely proportional to the development of the rhetorical art and theory. We have to take into account that we are dealing with ‘the rhetoric of epic’ and not ‘rhetoric in epic’. So this contribution offers not only an exemplary diachronic overview over the speeches in Greek and Latin epic, but builds on the theoretical background to the modes of speaking of the epic chararcters.
