Abstract: The theory of ancient art was founded by painters and sculptors of the 5th century B. C. onwards influenced by the Sophistic movement. Investigating the technai of image production, they developed a discourse of aesthetic criticism; in analogy to rhetoric the visual arts were therefore considered as persuading by pictorial means. Archaic architects were probably the first to comment their monuments when planning complex and highly expensive temples or urban structures.
