Abstract: Rhetoric as well as psychoanalysis share a common medium: language and speech. The knowledge of classical rhetoric has essentially influenced psychoanalytical practice as a talking cure and its rhetorical reflections on speech and the lifeworld. Their contiguity results from divided rhetorical assumptions on their practice and research objects on the one hand, and from the opposition against a common exterior: philosophy.
