Types of industrial processes

Industrial processes can be classified by whether their input and output is continuous or discrete. They can also be categorized by whether they belong to the process industry or the manufacturing industry, as shown in the following diagram:

A more precise classification splits each of these two main classes depending on the countability of their input and output. These classes are continuous, batch, semi-continuous and discrete, all of which are described in the following section.
