Test Drive

Monday, April 5, 6:24 p.m. . . .

Barton, still at his desk, finished reading a document prepared for him by Angel Crow, then set it aside and looked up. Light from the window faded; late afternoon was becoming evening. Time, he thought, to try out the new version of the SSEER.

Following Crow’s instructions, Barton removed from his bottom desk drawer a head cover made of lightweight, almost skin-like silver fabric, with attached thick-framed, dark wraparound glasses attached. As he slid the cover down over his head like a ski mask, the visor came to life. Three LEDs lit amber, and two of them started to blink. One turned green, and then the rest did.
