12.1  Introduction

Aging power systems infrastructure and increasing power demand constitute a serious challenge for electric power systems. Power system components, and particularly power circuit breakers, are witnessing an increased fault current scenario often beyond their interrupting capabilities. This represents a problem not only for circuit breakers, but also for all other substation equipment and hardware, given the large electrodynamic stresses developed during faults.
