3  DTV Fundamentals

DTV is deceptively simple on the system level. But drilling down from functional blocks to implementation and even deeper to theoretical foundations, it quickly becomes obvious that the more you know about DTV technology, the more there is to learn.

This chapter begins to explain the basic principles used to engineer DTV. A big picture, conceptual overview is presented using the Motion Picture Experts Group, Advanced Television System Committee ands other standards as a basis. System-level building blocks of generic algorithms and technology used in a DTV system are described.
