In 1993, I assumed the title of Founder & Chairman of Russell Reynolds Associates (RRA) with a contract to act as a consultant. I retained an office at the firm for a while, along with a mandate to help. But I felt that when the founder of a company retires, he should leave completely, clearing the way for the next generation. And so I did.
After briefly pondering a life of travel, fitness, sailing, skiing, fund-raising, politics, and civic involvement, which I had been doing all along anyway, I realized that retirement was not all it’s cracked up to be.
