Healthcare in the United States is not what it should be. Our nation spends more on healthcare per capita than any other country, but we still lag far behind on many important measures of health. In 2010, the United States spent more than $2.6 trillion on healthcare, representing about 18 percent of our gross domestic product. But Americans receive only about half of the preventive, acute, and chronic care recommended by current research and evidence-based guidelines, and life expectancy in the United States is shorter than in many other countries. Cost is not the only issue. Access to both insurance and care itself has been an ongoing problem for millions of Americans.
