This chapter introduced health data standards; the organizations that develop, coordinate, and harmonize them; the process by which they are developed; examples of current standards initiatives; and a discussion of the business value of health data standards. Four broad areas were described to categorize health data standards. Health data interchange standards are used to establish communication protocols between and among systems. Vocabulary standards are used to describe clinical problems and procedures, medications, and allergies.
