Rounding in the Hospital

The inpatient environment presents numerous opportunities for the effective delivery of healthcare information. Imagine, for a moment, a large hospital with 500 beds, with 75 devoted to intensive-care patients. In such an environment, at any moment in time, some patients are improving as expected, some are stable but haven’t yet turned the corner for definite improvement, and, unfortunately, some are deteriorating. Taking this scenario a bit further, if a new parameter for a patient, say blood pressure or temperature, was recorded that clearly moved the patient out of the “improving” category and into the deteriorating category, how might this data point serve as a trigger for immediate evaluation?
