Scalability

Scalability is the ability of a system, network, or process to handle a growing amount of work in a capable manner or the ability of a system, network, or process to be enlarged to accommodate that growth.4 When an organization is considering its design or purchase requirements for health IT systems, it should also consider its ability to easily and quickly enhance the system by adding new functionality and/or storage capacity. A system that can easily “scale” to meet new requirements enables an organization to invest in technology based on current needs without having to replace the system when requirements change.
