Chapter 4: Fundamentals of convection

Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to the physical and mathematical fundamentals of convection. After describing the types of convection, the chapter explains the fundamental definition of convective heat transfer. The true origins of the heat transfer coefficient are discussed, followed by the merits and demerits of Newton's law of cooling. A detailed derivation of the mass, momentum, and energy equations is carried out in differential form. The physical importance of the various terms of the equations is also reviewed.
