What Is High Definition?
The family of video formats that we call high definition was initially defined by the number of the image’s horizontal lines. The common numbers used to refer to high definition size are 720 and 1080, the vertical resolution (number of horizontal lines from top to bottom) of the frame. Although a high definition frame is initially defined by its horizontal line (pixel) count, there are additional considerations within the 12 high definition formats in the ATSC table. There are even more choices when production formats that record these HD images are considered. The complicated and detailed choices that are available to shoot are what constitute the high definition production format family.
