High dynamic range (HDR) images may be captured from real scenes or rendered using 3D computer graphics (CG) techniques such as radiosity and ray tracing. A few modern graphics cards are even capable of generating HDR images directly. The larger topic of CG rendering is well covered in other textbooks [95,293,177,141,75]. In this chapter, the focus is on practical methods for capturing high-quality HDR images from real scenes using conventional camera equipment. In addition, commercial hardware designed to capture HDR images directly is beginning to enter the market, which is discussed toward the end of this chapter.
