Abstract:
This chapter discusses the application of high temperature superconductors (HTS) to generators and motors. It first reviews the benefits and rationale for applying HTS technology to generators and motors. It then describes compromises affecting the electromagnetic, mechanical and thermal design for such machines. The different types of machine topology possible, their respective advantages and disadvantages and their key performance characteristics compared to equivalent conventional machines are then outlined.
