18New Blood and Dead Wood
“Good morning,” said Sam to the Stamina staff. “This is the first of four quarterly meetings this year, and I have lots to share. Since March is halfway over, I wanted to cover what Stamina's done this year and where we're going.”
Sam motioned to the TV.
“I'll present the same material I presented to the board yesterday. But this meeting is different because it will end with us setting goals for quarter two. I want this meeting to prove that from now on, I'll be transparent. And the first thing I want to be transparent about is admitting I haven't been a great leader. But as I hope you've seen, I'm changing that.”
Sam clicked to a baseball player on the first slide.
“A lot of the changes are due to Coach Knight's influence. He also helped me prepare this talk. Please bear with me because I can't tell a story like he does yet.”
Sam looked at the slide.
“A young baseball player made it to the major leagues. He had natural talent, but his play was overshadowed by his bad behavior. Since he was playing well, he thought he could do whatever he wanted. If he struck out, he threw his bat and helmet. If he got called out, he screamed at the umpires. Once after failing on an important at-bat, he smashed the dugout water cooler and splashed water on his teammates. He was out of control and his teammates avoided him. Because of his good numbers, the team was afraid to reprimand him.”
