Checking Resumes and References

CHECKING RESUMES and references is an essential part of the hiring process. From experience, employers have discovered that resumes are usually inaccurate, sometimes professionally produced, and often dishonest or misleading.

In more than 50 percent of cases, individuals will overstate their qualifications in some way. We have also discovered that referrals or reference letters are not worth very much because often they are handed out in exchange for the person leaving in peace: “If you accept our severance offer and depart without making any trouble, we will write you a nice letter of reference for your next employer, and we will only say nice things if anyone calls us to ask about you.”
