In 1974, computer visionary Ted Nelson wrote the combined books Computer Lib/Dream Machines,* a counterculture-infused introduction to computers and computer concepts aimed at the general population with the tagline “You can and must understand computers NOW.” Nelson’s motivation stemmed from his concern with the fundamental misunderstandings of computers by the public and what he saw as narrow-minded computer applications by government and corporate entities.
