Many of the management attributes we’ve looked at in the Hollywood system ensure control over scope, costs, and schedules through the use of specific, time-proven practices, such as script analysis, preproduction planning, and the screening of dailies. But we’ve also now touched on a series of controls that have less to do with practices than with the form of the system itself. The studio production system comes embedded with a set of limiting factors that provide extended controls. These factors are evidenced in the kinds of forms and formats Hollywood uses to package a product and to keep that product to a manageable size.
