When a motion picture is being cut together during post-production, the editor and the director work as a team. Their job is to physically glue shots, scenes, and sequences together to establish the rhythm, pace, and dramatic tone of the movie suggested in the original script. Those qualities were, after all, what the studio and its executives responded to in the first place; they were the "sell points" that kicked the project into gear.
