Leveraging Knowledge Management
Establishing lessons learned as a formal project management tool supports two goals within an organization: knowledge management and continuous improvement. Knowledge management can be thought of as informed decision making; it’s the technique of making decisions, in part, through an assessment of past experience. Lessons learned can provide a documented wellspring of insights from past experience. Continuous improvement is the practice of regularly (and consciously) assessing organization performance to look for opportunities to make that performance more efficient or effective. A lessons learned process can help by documenting previous performance outcomes for later comparison and analysis.
