Series editor's preface
The last decade has seen considerable change in the world of employment. Organizations have shed roles and management layers in their attempt to be more cost-effective, competitive and closer to their customers. The ‘leaner organization’ concept, with its emphasis on teamworking, better use of technologies and greater opportunities for innovation, certainly appears to be benefiting many organizations which have seen improvements in quality and the bottom line. The trend towards ongoing organizational change and restructuring appears set to continue.
What appears to be successful as an organizational strategy may offer fewer benefits to employees however. Changing work practices have carried in their wake a degree of confusion. ...
