Designing for charts
In 2010, the BBC’s Mark Easton wrote about the local and national challenges Britain was facing in caring for its elderly people. To illustrate these challenges, he used screenshots from an interactive, animated map I had created for the UK Office for National Statistics to accompany “National Older People’s Day”.
In citing my work, Mark kindly referred to me as “the award-winning designer Alan Smith”. This was curious – I had never considered myself “a designer” before. Seeing this on the BBC website, where hundreds of thousands of people likely would read it, made me feel somewhat of an impostor.
